Google AI Overviews and AI Mode in France: what really changes

Google Search’s AI Overviews and AI Mode are now rolling out in France. These features can add AI-generated responses to some searches and let people continue a question conversationally. They do not replace every traditional result: links to websites remain available for readers who want to explore further.

The change matters for users, creators and publishers alike. A more detailed search can surface a broader range of sources, provided those pages genuinely answer a specific question and offer verifiable information.

What are AI Overviews?

An AI Overview is a summary that may appear above web links when Google determines it could help answer a query. It does not show for every search. Its purpose is to provide a quick starting point and then point readers to web pages for detail, evidence and different perspectives.

Readers should still check the linked sources, particularly for health, money, law, travel or fast-moving news. A summary is not proof: publication date, author and original source still matter.

What is Google AI Mode for?

AI Mode lets people write a longer request, ask a follow-up and, where available, search with voice or an image. It is designed for questions that used to require several searches: planning a trip with constraints, comparing methods, understanding a complex subject or troubleshooting step by step.

Google says its system can explore multiple subtopics within a request before presenting an answer and links. That makes a clear prompt valuable: include the country, date, budget, location or constraints when they matter.

How to use it carefully

  • Ask a specific question and include location or dates where relevant.
  • Open source links before making an important decision.
  • Request comparisons using clear criteria instead of a vague recommendation.
  • Do not share passwords, sensitive documents or personal data in a search prompt.
  • For an emergency or medical, legal or banking issue, contact an official source or qualified professional.

What it changes for websites

Google says web links remain central to these experiences. The most useful pages explain a topic, give a method, cite sources and answer the reader’s actual intent. Keyword stuffing or publishing thin summaries does not make a page more trustworthy.

For a small publisher, the practical approach is unchanged: name the author, update time-sensitive claims, separate facts from uncertainty, use precise titles and add useful internal links. Original, helpful and well-sourced work has a stronger reason to be visited, whether a reader arrives from a classic link or an enhanced search experience.

Can site owners opt out?

Google says it has added Search Console controls for site owners relating to participation in generative Search features. Those controls are not described as a ranking factor for normal web results. Before changing any setting, consider the trade-off: a cited link can bring discovery, while an exclusion removes that opportunity.

Key point

AI Overviews and AI Mode change how people search, not the value of checking evidence. They make clear, complete and genuinely useful articles even more important.
