Separate airport conditions from your flight status
An FAA alert can show weather, departure holds, arrival metering or broader delays. It does not mean every aircraft will have the same delay. Check your airline’s app or website using the flight number, then look at the departure airport and the incoming aircraft when that information is available.
Why can a flight still say “on time”?
Not every system updates simultaneously. An aircraft may be late on its previous sector while the next departure still temporarily shows on time. The status can also change as the airline reorganises crew, gates or aircraft.

What if your connection is tight?
Do not wait until landing to examine alternatives. Use the airline app, identify later services and ask whether a change can be confirmed. If both sectors are on one reservation, the carrier can generally manage the itinerary more easily than when separate tickets were bought.
Refunds, meals and hotels
In the United States, assistance and commitments depend on the cause, airline and size of the change. Weather is not handled in the same way as a cancellation within the airline’s control. Keep notifications, boarding passes and receipts, then consult the airline’s commitments and the Department of Transportation dashboard.
Beware of fake customer-service accounts
Major disruptions attract impersonators responding on social media. Never provide a full card number, password or verification code. Use the airline app, the official number on the booking or an identified airport desk.
If you are already at O’Hare
- watch for gate changes;
- charge your phone where it is safe;
- keep medication and documents in your carry-on;
- get confirmation of a new booking in writing;
- check what happens to bags before leaving the area.
